4 Main Principles of Time Management

One of the skills that successful people master is time management skills.  Once the skills of managing time are mastered, many things can be achieved with excellent results.  People tend to get overwhelmed with the amount of activities that they have to do in a day and tend to achieve only very little.  This is due to lack of concentration and focus as well as organization of the things that they have to do.

Time management means more than just managing the time you have on your hands.  It is also managing your discipline and mindset by taking charge of the time you have and utilizing it in such a way that you get to accomplish set goals in the time that you have.

There are several principles of time management that one has to keep in mind in order to achieve more in the time that one has in his or her hands.

The first principle of time management is to develop a time management mindset.  We first have to adjust how we react to the workload that we have before we can manage it effectively.  Always keep the mindset that we can control many of our activities with ease with the proper time management skills.

The second principle of time management is to be organized.  Be organized in terms of your physical surroundings as well as with your schedule.  Make sure you have places to put all your things and make sure that you put them away once you are done with utilizing them.  If there are things that you use more often than others, place them in a more accessible area.  Throw away things that you no longer need.  Having clutter around your workplace will only heighten the feeling of stress and pressure.  Be organized with your schedule as well.  Set a certain time for different tasks, and make sure that you stick to it every day.  If you have a task that may seem too heavy, it is best to divide them into a series of small tasks.  This will make the heavy task more manageable.  Plus, you will be able to fit these small pieces into your schedule more easily.

The next principle of time management is to be careful in choosing your workload.  Often, the problem with having a much too heavy workload is because we tend to say yes to too much tasks.  Make sure that you have your own criteria for accepting certain tasks.  If a certain task does not fit your criteria, learn to say no.  If possible, you can also delegate tasks effectively to others.

Another very important principle of time management is to schedule yourself some down time.  This is very important because you have to get some rest or else you may go crazy.  Scheduling some down time for yourself to spend with your family or your friends will actually help you work more efficiently and effectively because you will get more energized and recharged.
